Get up to speed in fractured reservoir characterisation

Fractured reservoirs often display very variable well performance due to the high degree of heterogeneity associated with the fracture system. We provide two courses that are designed to help geoscientists and reservoir engineers develop and apply their skills and understanding to the challenges set by fractured reservoirs:

"Naturally Fractured Reservoirs: An Introduction to their Appraisal and Management "  - a largely classroom based course covering geology, geomechanics and reservoir engineering and featuring a day on the excellent fractured Jurassic exposures of the Bristol Channel coast  (UK). See a course summary below.

“Outcrop Analogs to Fractured Carbonates”  -  a largely field-based course situated in the Spanish Pyrenees where spectacular exposures of fractured  carbonates (and other rock types !) are to be found. Also including classroom sessions on structural geology for fractured reservoirs, and case histories For a description of the fractured carbonates course follow this link.

John Cosgrove from Imperial College leading our field visit

This is an outline of the UK course;

  • overview of fractured reservoirs - types, development history, technical issues, workflow for characterisation
  • basics of structural geology and rock mechanics that underpin fracture characterisation
  • field visit to fractured outcrops
  • fracture and flow characterisation from well and reservoir data - tools and techniques to identify, characterise and map fractures and flow
  • geomechanics issues and techniques - evaluation in-situ stress and assess its effects on fracture and reservoir reservoir performance
  • construction of fracture models - data preparation, fracture prediction methods, use of outcrop data, integration with reservoir and dynamic data
  • case histories from a range of fractured formations
  • reservoir engineering - tools and techniques for evaluating and modelling reservoir behaviour
