Interwell Fracture Prediction

Where are the producing fractures?

Fill in the gaps before drilling the traps.

Reliable assessments of reservoir fracture characteristics and distributions in the interwell volume are important for reservoir simulation and future well planning. This remains an outstanding challenge for the industry. We can apply techniques that will help constrain the characteristics of the fracture network. Benefits of our Interwell Fracture Prediction service include;

  • evaluation of relative fracture density variation and likely orientations,
  • assessment of fracture connectivities,
  • calibration of fracture density variations derived from seismic volume mapping, and
  • identification of potential sweet spots for well planning.

Several techniques can be used to estimate the density and distribution of fractures away from areas of data control. Two that we use are fractal analysis and curvature analysis.

Example of box counting of synthetic fracture set.

Fractal analysis

Fractal analysis can help you define your fracture population characteristics. Given fault or fracture data from a range of scales, such as a map of seismic scale faults or wellbore scale fault and fracture spacing data, GeoScience will determine whether the population is fractal and provide an estimate of the small-scale fracture densities. GeoScience will then select and use a suitable process for distributing those features within your reservoir volume.

Curvature variations in a carbonate reservoir.

Curvature analysis

In fractured sedimentary rocks, the curvature of a surface can provide an estimate of fracture distribution and density within the unit. We apply curvature analysis to gridded surfaces and obtain estimates of curvature at a range of scales. In addition to the amount of curvature, the direction of curvature can also be assessed. This will estimate the direction of the fracturing.

These techniques provide input to the Fractured Reservoir Models that we build.
