St Cuthmans Retreat Centre
GeoScience assisted Baystar with the design of a lake based, surface water source heat pump (SWSHP) system at this retreat centre in Sussex. The collector system in the lake supplies two heat pumps that can deliver 120kW for the main building. The collector system was designed by GeoScience to absorb the ambient heat from the lake, while maintaining low parasitic pumping losses by careful design of the hydraulics. The system is bi-valent, using an oil boiler for top-up when required. High temperature heat pumps deliver to the existing radiators in the property.
A full feasibility study was carried out with Baystar to arrive at the optimal sizing of the SWSHP systems, and to assess that the surface area and volume of the lake could deliver the required energy on a sustainable basis. The system qualifies for non-domestic RHI , and has been operating successfully since installation and commissioning in 2016.
