GEOTHERMAL

Geothermal is a renewable, sustainable, low carbon energy source that exists everywhere.

Near the surface it can be harnessed using ground source heat pumps to provide heating and cooling in buildings. At depths of a few hundred metres, higher temperature resources can be used for a wide variety of direct heating and industrial processes and at greater depths the temperature is high enough to allow electricity generation.

The technology is not new. It has been used for decades to provide renewable heat and power and 90 countries currently include it in their energy mix.

Geothermal has a pivotal role to play in the global initiative to reduce carbon emissions, particularly with regard to decarbonising our heating demands, and the variety of available technologies means that it can be applied from very small to very large scales
