Lucy Cotton

Geothermal Group Manager & Senior Geologist

Lucy joined GeoScience in 2017 after completing her MSc in Exploration Field Geology at University College Cork. Her love of geology combined with her enthusiasm for the environment led her to pursue a career in geothermal energy. Outside the office Lucy enjoys surfing, hiking and playing the guitar.


January 2012 - Present – GeoScience Limited, Summer Internships, Project Geologist on UDDGP from January 2017 until May 2020, then Chief Geologist.

  • Working as part of the geology team carrying out multiple feasibility studies for geothermal projects around the UK from shallow and medium depth heat projects to deep geothermal power

  • This work involves understanding different geological criteria for varying applications and duties include: data acquisition and interpretation, high-level seismic surveys and wellbore log analysis

  • Preparation of technical reports for clients and the creation of digital resources using ArcGIS to spatially represent data sets.

January 2017 - May 2020 Project Geologist at the United Downs Deep Geothermal Power project.


  • Geology: Site Geologist for the United Downs Deep Geothermal Power project.

    • Responsibilities included: logging and analysis of cuttings from the production and injection wells; assistance in data analysis and interpretation of wireline logs and data management during well testing

    • Alongside site geology duties, other technical roles involved working as part of the project management team from planning through to development, assisting with tenders, well design and seismic hazard assessments

    • Responsible for data collection and main contact point for two international Horizon2020 projects associated with UDDGP (S4CE and MEET)

  • Education:

    • Worked as part of the geothermal education team on the design and implementation of a successful geothermal communication, education and outreach programme. This included creating explanation animations, designing suitable engaging activities for multiple age groups; running the seismicity for schools programme and launch event with Professor Iain Stewart from Plymouth University and hosting multiple visits at the United Downs site, ranging in age and interest from Primary School to University level and local community interest groups

  • Public Engagement:

    • Regular presentations at school assemblies, guest lecture presentations at universities (including Camborne School of Mines and University College London) and multiple paper and poster presentations at national and international technical conferences and institutional meetings

    • Two Key Note Speeches at Girls into Geoscience and iGEO2020 in Galway, Ireland. Public engagement work also included interviews with two Radio 4 programmes: Costing the Earth and Inside Science


2012 to 2016 – Summer internships, Technical Assistant.

  • Basement Reservoirs:  Writing geological reports on Palaeozoic and Basement Reservoir Rocks and Geothermal Reservoirs from Fractured Basements using GIS to create DTM models

  • Oil & Gas:  Developing large data stratigraphic logs from core data in oil exploration for client presentations
