GeoScience Ltd was founded in 1985 by a small number of staff from the UK’s Hot Dry Rock geothermal research project. It was initially owned by a US-based geothermal developer and during the late 1980s we provided subsurface technical support to their operations in California and Oregon.

Since 1992 the company has been owned by Dr Tony Batchelor.

During the 1990s we provided extensive services to the UK Nirex site investigations at Sellafield and Dounreay, designing and supervising the drilling and testing of 23 deep boreholes and, later, the science programme for the planned Rock Characterisation Facility shafts.

In the late 1990s we began to develop services for the oil & gas industry and this has become the mainstay of our business.

We have successfully completed hundreds of operationally focussed geomechanics services and reservoir geology characterisation studies for new and mature fields all over the world, using data from thousands of wells, and saving millions of dollars for our clients.

We have remained active in the geothermal sector, providing services to both conventional fields and Engineered Geothermal Systems (EGS), carrying out due diligence and feasibility studies and promoting the take-up of geothermal energy.

We pioneered the utilisation of shallow Ground Source Heat Pump systems in the UK for the heating and cooling of commercial and domestic buildings and, until May 2020, were project manager and Delivery Partner for the United Downs Deep Geothermal Power project in Cornwall.
